The India - Nepal Dispute (Part 2)
The India - Nepal Dispute
Part 2
In 2015 when a devastating earthquake hit Nepal,India aid a financial aid of 1.6 billion Nepali rupees to rebuild the calamity.
Today the age old relation of Friendship & Cooperation is in danger, currently the Indo-Nepal relation aren't the same as they used to be. And this is quite disheartening.
1. The Dispute
- On 8th April,India inaugurated a 80km long land route, linking Kailas Manasarovar from Uttarakhand via Lipulekh.
- The project is very helpful for pilgrims visiting Manasarovar as it reduces the travelling distance by 6 days.
- No sooner had India inaugurated this project than some Anti-Indian subjects of Nepal started protesting it.
- According to the protestants,India has built the road in the territory of Nepal, which is not acceptable.
Both Nepal & India claim that the new road is in their territory.
2. What is Kalapani ??
- Kalapani is a valley enroute of Kailas Manasarovar @3600mtr altitude, located 10km east of Lipulekh.
- According to the Sugauli Treaty,R.Kali is the border between India and Nepal, but it hasn't mentioned whether the origin of the river(Kalapani)is also the border.
- Both India & Nepal claim on Kalapani-India as a part of Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district and Nepal as a part of Dharchula district.
3. Strategic Importance of Kalapani
- Kalapani is a Tri-Junction point of India-China-Nepal. Therefore the one who controls Kalapani has an advantage over other.
- In 1962 war,China tried attacking Indian troops at Kalapani, but due to geographical advantage they couldn't hurt India.
- Since 1962 the Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP)Jawan control Kalapani.
- While, the Kalapani region is governed by Pithoragarh district since then
4. The Revenge of Doklam Crisis
- In 2017 when Indian & Chinese troops came face to face on Doklam Plateau.India (Ajit Doval) was successful in making China withdraw it's army.
- In 2017 Chinese newspaper-Global Times said that if India interfere in Doklam, then China would cause crisis for India in J&K and Uttarakhand region.
- Thus it is confirm that Indo-Nepal dispute has connection with China.
Today the 35 km² region of Kalapani is under dispute between India and Nepal as China has given air to it.
I'll cover the Political tension regarding this is the next blog.
