At a height of more than 6000mtrs above sea level,a battle was about to take place for the very first time in the history of the world. Either of them didn't knew how would it end, but they knew that it wasn't going to be that easy.
This blog is about Operation Meghdoot by Indian Army done in 1984.


1. The Surprise

  • In 1984 PM Indira Gandhi ordered army to establish control over Siachen.
  • As sort of preperation,Lt.Gen.P.N.Hoon placed an order of the necessary items for operation to Europe.
  • But meanwhile he came to know that Pakistan had already purchased all the items necessary for cold climate expendition.
  • Pakistan was planning to establish control over Siachen.

2. The Plan

  • In early 1984,Indian Intelligence had reported the Army,that Pakistan is intending to capture Siachen by 17/4/1984.
  • P.N.Hoon launched Operation Meghdoot on 13/4/1984 to preempt the opposition.
  • 4 troops were deployed for Saltoro Ridge,under taskforce commander-Lt.Col.Pushkar Chand.

3. The Mission

  • On 13th April,the MI8 & Cheetah helicopter gave an airdrop to 4 Kumaon troop,@0730 hrs Cap.Sanjay Kulkarni captured Bilafond La.
  • On 17th April,Maj.Bahuguna captured Sia La.
  • While D.K.Khanna marched towards Gyongla and captured it in June.

  • Artillery support was offered to safeguard Indian posts including Surface-Air Missile & 2 ditachment @ Sia La & Bilafond La. 2-Zu-23-2 guns @ Lolofond la Siachen,Leh Airfield& Thoise Airfield.

4. Operation Ababeel

  • To way off India from Siachen, Pakistan launched Operation Ababeel in April1984.
  • But Indian troop successfully demolished Pakistani attacks and captured Siachen.
Thus in 1984, India prevented Pakistan & China from connecting eachother by capturing Siachen region through Operation Meghdoot.
